Winter Sun Holidays: Where to Go (and what to pack!)

It’s around this time of year that most of us start to miss the fleeting summer sunshine. With winter on the horizon, the cold weather seems to stretch out ahead with months of drizzle, wind and even snow to come.

Why not lift your spirits with a last minute winter sun holiday? There are some fantastic bargains to be had at this time of year, as long as you avoid the half term holidays from school, and many destinations offer year round sunshine to give you an autumn pick me up that will see you through to next summer.

Where to Go

The Canary Islands are a great choice for year round good weather, and the out of season deals are available at rock bottom prices. Choose Lanzarote for family fun, Tenerife for nightlife or Gran Canaria for relaxation.

If you want to go further afield, Mexico, Tunisia and Egypt are affordable longer haul choices. Consider an all inclusive deal if you don’t want to have to worry about spending money while you’re there.

What to Pack

It can be tricky to find summer holiday clothes when the shops are full of autumn/winter new fashions, but George at ASDA has a capsule holiday shop with swimwear, maxi dresses and kaftans to fill your suitcase. The maxi dresses from George include a bright and bold bandeau style and a monochrome animal print maxi, so you can suit your own individual style.

Oversized t-shirts and shirts also make great cover-ups, especially in places where temperatures are likely to be warm but not scorching. Every suitcase should also have denim shorts and simple vest tops in a selection of colours to mix and match throughout the week.

For swimwear, George at ASDA comes up trumps again, with a good selection of swimwear to suit all body shapes, including all in ones, tankinis and bikinis. For a fashion forward look, choose a graphic print swimsuit – both maxi dresses mentioned have co-ordinating swimsuits, so you can look super stylish in prints by the pool.

When it comes to eveningwear, keep it simple. A maxi dress is great for day or night, or why not pack a stash of midis? You’ll find short sleeved midi dresses still in the shops that would look great with embellished sandals after dark. Do make sure that you take a few cover-ups too, just incase the temperature drops cooler during the evenings. A light knitted sweater, cardigan or denim jacket is ideal, and you can wear them on the flight over to save space in your case.

If you’ve already got a suitcase full of summer holiday clothes from last year, why not save your cash for cocktails on the beach and re-vamp those instead? Chunky gold chains are big fashion news, and will bring even the simplest holiday outfit bang up to date. You could also add flashes of neon for a modern look.

There are some amazing winter holiday bargains to be had in the run up to Christmas, so why not treat yourself to a last minute deal? There’s no need to spend a fortune on your holiday wardrobe, just add a few new purchases to what you already have and you’re sure to look stylish on those sands.

  1. This comes really handy to me since I live in an “all year round summer city”!
Definetly agree with the maxi dresses and oversized t-shirts! They’re comfy and keep you light and fresh!
